Led by MSE’s Systems Engineer Sam Barden, we are exploring alternate telescope optical variants that might revise the conceptual design of the MSE prime focus telescope design. The new concepts have several advantages over the current baseline, including increased sensitivity, access to the focal surface, as well as enabling up to a factor of four increase in multiplexing over the 1.5 square degree field of view (i.e., from ~4,000 fibers in the 2018 Conceptual Design to ~15,000 fibers) , plus the possibility of enhancing the spectral coverage from short-blue to K-band. As in the conceptual design, the telescope will simultaneously feed high- and low-to-moderate resolution spectrographs.
