About MSE
Exquisite seeing on a proven site
MSE is an 11.25-m, wide-field (1.5 sq. degree), optical and near-infrared facility that will replace the iconic 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) on the summit of Maunakea, a world-class astronomical site with unmatched free-atmosphere seeing (0.4” median seeing at 500nm). The resulting phenomenal image quality is an essential enabler of MSE science efficiency.
Astonishing productivity
MSE includes massive multiplexing (4332 spectra per exposure) over a wide range of spectral resolutions (R2500, 6000, >20,000) simultaneously and an on-target observing efficiency exceeding 80%. MSE is completely dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy of millions of astrophysical objects, to deliver the wealth and quality of observational data needed to answer the next generation of questions about our universe.
Sound engineering principles
MSE will be a state-of-the-art observatory inspired by the latest technical advancements made by other top astronomical facilities around the world. MSE builds on the knowledge and experience gained from CFHT’s four decades of successful operation atop Maunakea. This development philosophy minimizes costs and risk, while ensuring an efficient and cohesive design with the least possible impact on the environment of Maunakea and the Big Island of Hawai’i.
